Self Portraits

Artist Statement

As a self-portraiture artist my practice resonates through the documentation of myself through either my alter-ego the Sock Monkey or series of self-portraits drawn, photographed and painted at key fragments of my life.  My personal environment dictates and defines myself.  My artworks are products of my atmosphere and pieces are constructed once a personal trigger has occurred. These triggers reflect defining moments in my life, shaping the person that I am. The works heavily reflect my constant battle with depression and self inflicted pressures I feel to 'fit in' and 'be normal'.  My self portraits reflect the sombre nature of my internal struggles where colours, materials and subtle facial expressions highlight the feeling and mood in the works.
In contrast my alter-ego the Sock Monkey reflects on the somewhat humorous and chaotic aspect to my life.  I am a work-a-holic and sucker for punishment one might say.  I do everything I can and more, which creates a paradox, do I work to fight the depression or am I depressed because I am over worked?
